CHILE: THE
WINEMAKER'S PARADISE
The geographical and climatic conditions in Chile are rich with
opportunity for world-class winemaking. Having been well
insulated by the fiercely protective boundaries of the Andes mountain
range to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Chilean vines were
never infected by the dreaded Phylloxera insect, and thus, possess
original rootstock, In addition, agrochemicals or pesticides are
rarely needed in the Chilean vineyards since diseases and pests are
infrequent. Sunshine is ubiquitous in the Central Valley, yet it
is tempered by mountain and ocean breezes that create ideal temperature
variability for ripening grapes. Finally, the soil and water
conditions require little intervention since the loose soil drains well
and natural irrigation from mountain runoff requires only a little
enhancement with drip irrigation systems. Voila! This is a
place that appears to be naturally blessed for superb winemaking.
